The color tends to be medium to dark brown, sometimes with a reddish or purplish tinge; some pieces may have yellowish or greenish brown streaks.
Cumaru has excellent strength and weathering properties. The wood is rated as very durable in terms of rot resistance, with good resistance to termites and other dry wood borers.
Cumaru has a faint, vanilla- or cinnamon-like odor when processed.
Common uses: flooring, cabinets, furniture, heavy structures, docks, railroad ties, bearings, handles, and other turned items.
Dipteryx odorata wood is most commonly called Cumaru by most woodworkers, although it is also sometimes referred to as Brazilian teak: primarily when used as hardwood flooring. (Brazilian teak is not related to the wood most commonly called teak, Tectona grandis.)
Cumaru is also known by the name Tonka Bean, and the tree is commonly cultivated for its vanilla-cinnamon-scented seeds, the tonka bean, which contain a chemical compound called coumarin.
Cumaru lumber is extremely stiff, strong, and hard, and can be used for a variety of applications. It is sometimes used in place of the much rarer Lignum Vitae.
Cumaru wood fluoresces in the dark, which can help distinguish it from Ipe.
